Hazardous Materials Management Checklist
Rules, guidance and legislation around hazardous materials management are important to comply with.
This can be seen in the April 2019 chemical factory fire in Campbellfield. More than 175 firefighters were required to tackle the large fire which sent thick black smoke across Melbourne, burning for days.
The address was registered to a toxic waste disposal company that had its licence suspended by the environmental regulator a fortnight before the fire for ‘storing more waste than permitted’.
During a March 13 inspection, EPA officers found as well as storing more waste than its licence allowed storage containers were inadequately labelled and being handled outside an appropriate area.
The stockpile of non-compliant chemicals had been reduced prior to the fire which resulted in an incident that whilst still serious was far less concerning and of impact than it may have potentially been.
A comprehensive and effective hazardous materials management process will help your organisation to identify, control and manage hazardous materials in the workplace.
