Issue:
The client required an external audit conducted on its mining contractors in relation to compliance with their Safety Management System (SMS). The client wanted to identify:
- Key areas of non-compliance with the sites SMS; and
- Recommendations for improvement for both them and their contractors.
Scope of Work:
SSI was approached by an international gold producer to employ the services of an experienced safety auditor to attend their site and conduct SMS audits across multiple mining contractors and present their findings and recommendations.
Summary of what SSI Provided:
Client supplied information (i.e. management plans, procedures and records), and SSI subject matter expert (SME) knowledge was utilised to prepare for the SSI employee to attend site.
The SSI employee attended the site and spent multiple days with the mining contractors observing their processes and reviewing their systems and records.
On completion of the audit the key findings and recommendations were compiled and presented to the client for consideration.
SSI’s internal training system and quality process was utilised to ensure consistency in format, grammar, terminology and writing style, between all SMEs who participated in this project.
Results:
- Scope of work was accurately specified.
- Project was completed on time and under budget.
- Minimal impact on client’s business due to SME knowledge and understanding of source information prior to attending site.
- SSI representative was well received across the business and with contractors.
- Reports were of a high quality and provided clear key findings and recommendations.
- Overall outcome resulted in the client understanding how the mining contractors comply with their requirements and how they can assist contractors to further improve their systems.
