Optimising Fixed Plant Training: Addressing Gaps in Risk, Competency, and Operational Alignment
Issue:
Existing fixed plant training and competency assessment tools did not adequately cover risk, operating requirements and competency standards for operators. Additionally, they were not aligned with existing operating manuals, standard operating procedures, and work instructions (WI).
Scope of Work:
SSI developed a client approved scope of work to review existing fixed plant training materials including:
- operating and training manuals,
- standard operating procedures,
- work instructions (WI), and
- practical assessment tools.
The outcome of the review resulting in the development of a fixed plant training package which included:
- Mapping of training, skills and competency pathways
- Development of equipment familiarisation assessment tools
- Mapping of existing WI to assessment tools
- Review and recommendations for development of user-centred WIs
Summary of what SSI Provided:
A locally based Technical Writer with over 15 years experience in work health, safety and quality management and skilled in user-centred design and usability mapping of technical documents and processes.
What went well (Client Testimonial):
- Great connection between Emma and myself. The regular check-ins were great.
- Emma’s ability to quickly understand the brief requirements.
- The improvements made to the presentation of the materials using CBH Style Guide.
- Gaps identified in the Work Instructions that have not been included from the Operator Manual, potential of contributing factors from safety alerts not included in Work Instruction reviews.
- Suggestions to improve the wording in Work Instructions to provide greater clarity for the operators using them.
- Mapping assessment to Work Instructions and Original Equipment Manufacturer Manuals – a task that had dropped by the wayside. Good to be reminded of this practice to support the design of training and assessment documents.
